Sapodilla Care
Sapodilla is a tropical evergreen adapted primarily to warm South Florida. It is not a dependable outdoor fruit tree for Northeast Florida and also carries an important invasive-plant caution.

Climate & Site
- Climate: Sapodilla is tropical. Northeast Florida freezes can severely injure or kill young trees.
- Sun: Use full sun in the warmest, most protected microclimate available.
- Drainage: Plant only in well-drained soil.
- Spacing: Allow room for a medium-to-large tree if grown in a suitable climate.
Northeast Florida: this is an experimental/protected-culture plant rather than a reliably adapted landscape fruit tree.
Watering, Feeding & Pruning
- Watering: Keep newly planted trees consistently moist while establishing; mature trees tolerate some drought but fruit better without severe stress.
- Fertilization: Use light, regular feeding on young trees and avoid excessive nitrogen.
- Pruning: Prune to control height and remove dead or poorly placed branches; sapodilla tolerates size-control pruning.
- Cold protection: Protect the trunk, root zone, and canopy of small trees whenever freezing temperatures are forecast.
Fruit & Harvest
- Bearing: Grafted trees can begin fruiting several years after planting under favorable conditions.
- Ripeness: Harvest maturity can be difficult to judge; fruit picked too early remains gummy with latex.
- Handling: Allow mature harvested fruit to soften at room temperature before eating.
- Pests: Monitor for scale insects and other tropical-fruit pests; use current label-directed controls only when needed.
Florida Invasive-Plant Caution
- university extension research status: university extension research has assessed sapodilla as invasive in South and Central Florida and does not recommend planting it there.
- Customer guidance: Before planting, check current university extension research Assessment guidance and local recommendations for your county.
- Prevent spread: Do not allow seedlings or unwanted fruit to establish outside cultivated areas.
