Ornamental Plant Care
General ornamental plant care for Northeast Florida landscapes, including site selection, watering, mulching, fertilization, pruning, and freeze protection.
Use the right plant in the right place. Ornamentals vary widely, so this guide covers the common Northeast Florida fundamentals and should be supplemented by species-specific instructions.

Right Plant, Right Place
- Light: Match full-sun, part-shade, or shade requirements to the actual site.
- Mature size: Allow space for the plant’s mature height and width to reduce constant pruning.
- Drainage: Choose species suited to the site’s drainage; do not force dry-loving plants into wet locations.
- Cold: Confirm cold tolerance before treating a tropical ornamental as permanent landscape material.
Watering & Mulch
- Establishment: Water newly installed plants frequently enough to keep the original root ball evenly moist while roots expand.
- Established plants: Transition to deeper, less frequent irrigation based on rainfall, soil, and species.
- Mulch: Maintain roughly 2–3 inches of mulch over beds but keep it away from trunks and crowns.
- Irrigation: Avoid automatic daily watering that keeps roots constantly wet.
Fertilization & Pruning
- Fertilizer: Use only enough fertilizer to maintain healthy growth; follow local fertilizer ordinances and label directions.
- Pruning: Prune for a reason—dead/damaged wood, structure, clearance, renewal, or size—not simply because a plant has flowered.
- Palms: Do not apply shrub/tree pruning rules to palms.
- Tools: Use clean, sharp tools and avoid topping trees.
Pest Management
- Inspect first: Identify the pest or disease before treating.
- Cultural control: Correct irrigation, drainage, crowding, or nutrient problems that are stressing the plant.
- Beneficial insects: Protect predators and pollinators whenever possible.
- Products: If treatment is needed, use a product labeled for the plant and pest and follow the current label exactly.
