Mango is a tropical/subtropical fruit grown most reliably in the warmest parts of South Florida. In St. Augustine it is a marginal outdoor crop: a protected microclimate, manageable tree size, and freeze protection are essential.
Mango Care Basics
- Sun: Full sun is required for best flowering and fruit quality.
- Drainage: Plant in well-drained soil and avoid low wet areas.
- Water: Water newly planted trees regularly; established mangoes tolerate dry periods but benefit from water during extended drought.
- Fertilizer: Avoid excessive nitrogen, particularly on mature trees; focus on balanced nutrition and micronutrients as needed.
- Pruning: Keep trees compact with selective pruning after harvest. Smaller trees are easier to protect from cold and easier to harvest.
- Bloom: Cool, dry weather favors flowering. Wet weather during bloom can increase anthracnose and powdery mildew problems.
- Cold: Young trees can be seriously injured around freezing temperatures. Protect before cold arrives.
- Regional expectation: Even healthy trees may not fruit every year in Northeast Florida because cold injury and winter weather can disrupt bloom.
