Fig Care
Figs are well adapted to much of North Florida. The biggest keys are full sun, good drainage, steady moisture during fruit development, sensible pruning, and sanitation when rust or fruit spoilage appears.

Fig Care Basics
- Sun: Full sun produces the best crops.
- Soil: Well-drained soil is preferred; figs tolerate a broad pH range.
- Water: Water new trees regularly; established trees benefit from irrigation during prolonged dry weather and fruit development.
- Fertilizer: Use moderate fertility. Excess nitrogen can produce rank growth and reduce fruiting.
- Pruning: Prune lightly for size and structure during dormancy; avoid unnecessary severe pruning.
- Rust: Fig rust is common in humid Florida and may cause early leaf drop. Rake heavily infected fallen leaves and improve airflow.
- Harvest: Pick only fully ripe, soft fruit; figs do not ripen satisfactorily after harvest.
- Cold: Established figs usually recover well from North Florida cold, though severe freezes can kill top growth.
