Cherry & Cherry-Like Fruit Care

Care for Barbados cherry, Montmorency sour cherry, and Surinam cherry in Northeast Florida, with clear climate differences.

These three plants share “cherry” in their common names but are botanically and climatically very different. Follow the individual section rather than assuming one cherry-care routine fits all.

Barbados Cherry

Barbados Cherry

  • Climate: Tropical/subtropical shrub; protect young plants from freezes in Northeast Florida.
  • Sun: Full sun for best flowering and fruiting.
  • Water: Even moisture during establishment; mature plants tolerate some drought.
  • Pruning: Prune after a fruiting flush to maintain a compact shrub and stimulate new flowering growth.
  • Fruit: Harvest frequently when fruit turns bright red and soft; ripe fruit bruises easily.
  • Container option: Container growing makes winter protection much easier in St. Augustine.
Montmorency Cherry

Montmorency Cherry

  • Climate: Montmorency is a true sour cherry with substantial winter-chill needs and is generally poorly matched to Florida winters.
  • Expectation: Tree growth does not guarantee reliable flowering or fruiting in Northeast Florida.
  • Sun: Full sun with excellent drainage.
  • Pollination: Montmorency is self-fruitful, but adequate winter chill remains the limiting issue.
  • Disease: Humidity can increase leaf-spot and rot pressure.
  • Recommendation: Present as experimental in Northeast Florida rather than as a reliably adapted fruit crop.
Surinam Cherry

Surinam Cherry

  • Climate: Warm-climate shrub/small tree; established plants tolerate more cool weather than many tropical fruits but can still be injured by hard freezes.
  • Sun: Full sun to part shade; best fruiting in sun.
  • Water: Regular water while establishing; avoid chronically wet soil.
  • Pruning: Tolerates hedging and size-control pruning.
  • Fruit: Quality varies among seedlings/cultivars; allow fruit to reach full mature color before harvest.
  • Florida caution: Check current invasive-plant guidance before recommending or planting Surinam cherry.
