Berry & Small Fruit Care

Care for blackberries, blueberries, mulberries, goji, boysenberry, and miracle fruit in Northeast Florida.

These plants are not one botanical group. Each section below has care tailored to the plant rather than reusing blackberry instructions.

Blackberry

Blackberry

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained, slightly acidic soil; mulch to conserve moisture.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist from bloom through harvest.
  • Pruning: For floricane types, remove canes that fruited after harvest and retain healthy new canes for next year.
  • Support: A trellis improves management, airflow, and harvest.
  • Florida note: Choose low-chill cultivars adapted to Florida.
Blueberry

Blueberry

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Soil: Very acidic, high-organic-matter root zone; many Florida sites need pine-bark based amendment or raised-bed/container culture.
  • Water: Shallow roots require even moisture and good drainage.
  • Fertilizer: Use light applications formulated for acid-loving plants; blueberries are sensitive to overfertilization.
  • Pollination: Two compatible cultivars of the same blueberry type often improve yield and berry size.
  • Pruning: Prune after harvest to remove weak wood and renew older canes.
Boysenberry

Boysenberry

  • Sun: Full sun to light afternoon shade.
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil.
  • Water: Consistent moisture during flowering and fruiting.
  • Pruning: Remove spent floricanes after harvest and tie new canes to support.
  • Support: Trellis trailing canes.
  • Regional note: Performance can be inconsistent in hot, humid Florida; monitor disease and heat stress.
Everbearing Mulberry

Everbearing Mulberry

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Soil: Adaptable but best in well-drained soil.
  • Water: Water regularly during establishment; mature trees tolerate moderate drought.
  • Pruning: Prune as a tree, not a bramble: remove crossing limbs and control height after harvest or dormancy.
  • Support: No trellis is needed.
  • Fruit: Birds are major competitors; harvest ripe fruit frequently.
Goji Berry

Goji Berry

  • Sun: Full sun to light shade.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil; avoid waterlogged conditions.
  • Water: Keep young plants evenly moist; established plants tolerate some drought.
  • Pruning: Thin and shorten woody stems to maintain an open shrub and encourage new fruiting growth.
  • Support: Staking or a simple support can help sprawling plants but is not the same as blackberry trellising.
  • Florida note: Humidity can increase leaf and disease problems; prioritize airflow.
Miracle Berry

Miracle Berry

  • Light: Bright filtered light or morning sun with protection from harsh afternoon sun.
  • Soil: Strongly acidic, organic, well-drained soil similar to azalea/blueberry culture.
  • Water: Keep evenly moist with low-alkalinity water when possible; do not allow chronic saturation.
  • Cold: Tropical and freeze-sensitive; container culture is strongly recommended in Northeast Florida so plants can be protected.
  • Fertilizer: Use light fertilizer for acid-loving plants.
  • Pruning: Only light shaping is normally needed; this is an evergreen shrub, not a cane berry.
Pakistani Mulberry

Pakistani Mulberry

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil.
  • Water: Regular water while establishing; avoid prolonged saturation.
  • Pruning: Train to a strong tree framework and control height for harvest access.
  • Cold: Pakistani mulberry can be more cold-sensitive than common mulberries; protect young trees in hard freezes.
  • Support: No trellis or cane removal.
Shangri-La Mulberry

Shangri-La Mulberry

  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Soil: Well-drained soil with mulch over the root zone.
  • Water: Water while establishing and during extended drought.
  • Pruning: Maintain an open tree canopy and manageable height; do not remove “spent canes.”
  • Fruit: Harvest frequently as berries soften and darken.
  • Support: No trellis needed.
