Banana & Plantain Care
Bananas are vigorous tropical herbs that need warmth, water, fertility, wind protection, and correct sucker management. In Northeast Florida, freezes commonly damage the leaves or pseudostems, so recovery and cold protection are part of normal care.
Banana & Plantain Care Basics
- Sun: Full sun is best, with wind protection where possible.
- Water: Bananas need consistent moisture during active growth but should not stand in saturated soil.
- Fertilizer: Feed regularly during warm active growth; bananas are heavy feeders, especially for nitrogen and potassium.
- Mulch: Maintain a broad organic mulch layer while keeping material away from the pseudostem base.
- Suckers: Maintain a small mat—typically one fruiting stem, one follower, and one smaller sucker—rather than allowing a dense thicket.
- After harvest: Cut the pseudostem that fruited back near ground level; each pseudostem fruits only once.
- Cold: Protect the corm/root zone and young stems during freezes. Damaged plants often resprout when warm weather returns.
- Fruit: Support heavy bunches if needed and protect developing fruit from wind damage.
