Growing Apples in Northeast Florida

Apple tree care for Northeast Florida, including low-chill variety selection, pollination, planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, pests, and cultivar-specific guidance.

Apples can be grown successfully in parts of North and North-Central Florida, but variety selection matters. Low-chill cultivars such as Anna, Dorsett Golden, and TropicSweet are much better matched to Florida winters than many traditional apple cultivars. Use this guide for planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, pollination, and variety-specific expectations in Northeast Florida.

Apple Care Basics for Northeast Florida

  • Choose the right cultivar: Winter chill is the limiting factor for many apples in Florida. For the most dependable production, prioritize proven low-chill cultivars.
  • Sun: Plant in full sun for best flowering, fruit quality, and disease management.
  • Soil & drainage: Apples perform best in fertile, well-drained soil. Avoid sites that stay wet after heavy rain.
  • Planting: Plant at approximately the same depth the tree was growing in its container or nursery row. Do not bury the graft union. Do not place fertilizer directly in the planting hole.
  • Watering: Keep newly planted trees consistently moist while roots establish. In sandy Florida soils, established trees may need supplemental irrigation during prolonged dry periods, especially during flowering and fruit development. Avoid chronic saturation.
  • Mulch: Maintain a weed-free mulched area around the tree, but keep mulch pulled several inches away from the trunk.
  • Fertilization: Use moderate, split fertilizer applications rather than heavy nitrogen feeding. Excessive nitrogen can create overly vigorous growth and can worsen fire blight problems.
  • Pollination: Most apples set better with a compatible second cultivar blooming at the same time. Anna and Dorsett Golden are a well-established pairing for Florida.
  • Pruning: Train young trees to a strong modified-leader framework. Remove dead, damaged, crossing, and diseased wood and keep the canopy open to light and airflow.
  • Disease watch: Monitor for fire blight, apple scab, bitter rot, and other local problems. Remove infected fire-blight shoots well below visible symptoms and sanitize pruning tools between cuts.
  • Cold & bloom: A warm winter can reduce flowering on cultivars that require more chill. Late freezes can also damage flowers and young fruit.

Northeast Florida note: A variety may survive here without fruiting reliably. When choosing an apple, judge it by both heat tolerance and its winter chill requirement.

Anna Apple

Anna Apple

  • Regional fit: One of the strongest choices for North and North-Central Florida. Anna is about 300 chill hours and is recommended for the region.
  • Pollination: Plant with Dorsett Golden for dependable cross-pollination; their bloom periods overlap well in Florida.
  • Fruit & season: Early-season apple with sweet to semi-acid flavor and red blush. In Gainesville-area trials, fruit ripened around late June to early July.
  • Care focus: Use the general apple-care practices above. Avoid excessive nitrogen and monitor closely for fire blight during spring growth.
